Pirates Of Penzance
Programme - March 1967
Supplied By Steve Czyrko
The Pirates of Penzance was first performed in the year 1879. Between the seemingly innocent lines of Gilbert's libretto there lies a satire on prevailing social customs and institutions much of which is still topical today. A clue to the satire is contained in the subtitle: "The Slave of Duty." Frederic's inordinate devotion to the letter of his obligations leads to a succession of amusing situations in the true tradition of comic opera.
