I

He thought he saw a maniac,
That wrote things with a slur,
He looked again and found it was,
Our noble editor,
“If I read aught it wrote,” he said,
“I would do myself an err.

II

He thought he saw an oil painting,
Of a barbarian,
He looked again and found it was,
The school librarian,
“Tis a grave misfortune,” he said,
“That of brains it has none.”

III

He thought he saw some old refuse,
A hanging on a hook
He looked again and found it was,
A “Longmans Latin Book,”
“Tis below my dignity” he said,
“At this to even look.”

IV

He thought he saw a circus clown,
All tangled in a net,
He locked again and found it was,
A very stern prefect,
“Unless I’m much at wrong" he said,
“A fool I can detect.”
