Extraction

It was the new school dentist
Who came on the scene unseen,
And Form Masters mustered their subjects
In blazers of 'Salvo' green;
Wide were their eyes as the mouths of sacks
And their cheeks as white as snow,
As they silently stood with pensive necks
And awaited the call to “Go”
  Firmly they grasped their papers white
And nervously stood in rows,
Then one by one passed out of sight
Each following a fear tipped nose.
No groans from the chamber came, no cries
No yelps from the dentists chair,
Each one stood in wild surmise
Each head with its upright hair.

"Open up wide" said the man in white,
"This hurts me more than you"
And into their mouths shone a blazing light
And their tonsils were there to view.
And, oh, the effects of sweets and cakes
And toffees and macaroons
And crunchy bars and chocolate flakes
And jam heaped up on spoons.
  The dental line stood all erect
Like guardsmen on parade
Or sailors on a cruiser's deck
In best white ducks arrayed.
But this was a line all battle scarred
By confectionery tanks,
The silver white enamel marred
Throughout the serried ranks.

Slowly the white clad dentist spoke
And his voice was the voice of doom
And even the bravest spirit broke
Outside the extraction room.
"This molar here we'll have to fill,
That incisor must come out;
The wisdom teeth will need the drill,
The gums a scrubbing out."
  Bowed were their heads as they heard him say
In dentrifistic terms –
These teeth will have to be taken away
They are a breeding place for germs;
Apples and raisins, nuts and fruit
A grated carrot or two;
These are the only 'sweets' that suit
And will save your teeth for you".

(Now at the Tuck Shop they're wasting
their wealth - They can get a false
set on the National Health.)
