Debate

A debate was held between our own sixth form and that of the Sacred Heart Convent. The girls proposed the motion that “This house is prepared to forego democracy for the benefits of material progress”.

McInerney, O'Neill and Richardson spoke for our side. The girls had a difficult case to argue for they were at heart strong believers in democracy. However they spoke very well, although the result of the debate did not do them justice. One solitary girl voted for the motion.

It is hoped that further debates will be arranged, as this one was enjoyed by those who took part. Next time we hope that the boys and girls will realize that they should vote, not according to their convictions, but according to how well the proposers and opposers have put their case.
