Chess Club

At the beginning of the new school year, most school clubs seem to start up again very slowly. However, this is not the case with the Chess Club. The Club meets in 2A form-room. Games can be played during the lunch-hour and on Friday evenings between 4.00 and 5.30. The membership fee is only one shilling for a complete school year, but this does not apply to First-formers, who are enrolled free of charge. With this incentive to beginners, it is hoped to raise the standard of play in the school.

We entered the Harrow and District Schools' League for the first time last year. The senior team was somewhat inexperienced and out of its depth and came last. However, this bleak statement does not reveal chess of quite a high quality and considerable improvement during the season. The junior team did very well, winning 9, drawing 3 and losing only 2 of its 14 league matches. They finished in second place, behind Orange Hill Grammar School.

The teams last year were as follows:

Senior
J. Sinclair, E. O’Gorman, A. Greenwood, J. Rossi, D. Cryan, D. Moore.
  Reserves
  S. Jones, R. Arduino, D. Hind.
Junior
A. Thurnham, A. Shaw, T. Swindells, S. Roguski.
  Reserves
  L. Kelly, A. Woolford, B. Taylor.

This season's results so far are given below.

The School v Parents match was a success once again, with 22 boards. The boys won easily, very ungallantly, but the parents did not seem to mind. The closest the Parents have been to victory was in March 1961, when the score was School 10 : Parents 8.

In October we were beaten in the first round of the "Sunday Times" National Schools Tournament, by Hayes Grammar School.

We are grateful to the Friends of the Salvatorian College, who are donating trophies, for individual and House Competitions, both senior and junior.

The senior individual Championship of 1963-64 was won by D. Cryan; J. Sinclair was runner-up. For various reasons, the Junior title was never decided. J. Rossi and A. Thurnham were the finalists.

Also a House Competition was held. We felt that the competition should have been a bit keener. Gabriel won the Senior House Championship, and Francis the Junior.

Besides the boys mentioned already, the following have represented the school recently, either in school 2nd teams or in the Parents-School matches: S. Dalloz, R. Gerrish, R. Harris, R. Linden-Kelly, P. McEvoy, P. Maddams, P. Mallaghan, M. Nawrocki, M. O’Gorman, G. O'Hagan, J. O'Sullivan, R. Parkinson, K. Prigmore, F. Rawson, M. Redknap, A. Rixon, W. Robertson, G. Rumbold, C. Shepheard, P. Stapleton, H. Wills, N. Woolford.

For every boy who finds his way on to a team, there are many more who play enthusiastically and well and these are the back-bone of the Chess Club. It is not intended for the few but for all who want to play even if they are not very good.
