Craft Club

The Craft Club has been meeting this year. Since September the Woodcraft Section has been meeting under Mr. Martin, and the Metalwork Section under Mr. Tufnell. Primarily the club is run to give senior boys, who do not take craft as a subject, an opportunity to use the workshops. Also it gives those younger boys, who are particularly interested in the practical work to do jobs outside normal course work.

Meeting on Mondays, the Woodcraft Section has a wide range of jobs being tackled. Earlier this year several 6th formers made drawing instrument cases in Mahogany. Other senior boys are busy on such jobs as a standard lamp, carved or turned dishes and book-shelves. This term has brought an interesting range of jobs. One boy has started the first piece or cabinet work to be made in the school - a record cabinet. Another is building a water wheel for a small stream in his garden at home. Several other more conventional jobs are being tackled too. There are a wide range of jobs being made by the Metalcraft Club en Tuesdays. Quite a number of these jobs have been designed by the boys themselves. One interesting project, which is almost finished, is the design and construction of a Magazine rack. Another senior boy is making a steam engine, whilst another is very slowly building a steam locomotive, which will take a number of years to make and will not be finished before he leaves school. Wrought iron pokers, fishing rod rests, match box holders, and a number of other things are being worked on.

Two rather bigger group projects are being planned by each craft club. The Woodcraft Club hopes to start soon on the construction of canoes, and the Metalcraft Club have started on a go-kart. For the latter we are trying to obtain a small second-hand single stroke engine, such as a lawn mower engine. We should be glad to hear of anyone who has one they do not want. It is hoped that the kart will travel at about 15 miles an hour so that the fundamentals of driving could be taught on it.

The other section of the Craft Club has expanded this year. The Stage Craft Club has had to build scenery for 6 plays this year instead of the normal one, because of the introduction of the Drama Festival. The school play set is going to test the abilities of the crew, as it consists of a great deal of Structural metal-work which is a new field to them. There is still room in all the three sections of the club for new members. We should particularly welcome members of the 4th, 5th and 6th years.
