The Geography Society

There are many boys of the Salvatorian College who are encouragingly enthusiastic about Geography, which is another way of saying that they find the world around them interesting. Unfortunately, the time-table cannot provide the amount of time they need to take a closer look at out world, because examination requirements must come first. But these boys have found an answer to the problem - The Geographical Society. This is organised and administered by a committee made up of the sixth form members - D. Cryan, L. Devries, M. Heath, D. Hooper, E. Nickless, J. Ockenden, M. Redknap, and W. Stone.

In addition to helping individuals, our aim is also to be of service to the rest of the school by providing film shows, exhibitions, a magazine, and various aids for class use, e.g. wall charts and models.

Since January 1964, there has been a gradual establishing of popular activities, including rambles and film evenings, and now more ambitious plans are being considered, to deal with the field of surveying and cartography. Group activities have been well supported and a programme of visits, rambles, films and lectures is being worked out at present by the committee assisted by Fr. Raymond, S.D.S., Mr. W. Moroney, and Mr. G. R. Shovelton. The enthusiastic individual work done during the lunch break and after school by many of the junior members is also encouraging.

Our most important plans for the future, however, are a first-rate bumper edition of "Geog Trot", the magazine of the Society, and an exhibition of models, maps, charts, pamphlets, photographs and specimens on the themes "This England".

We are certainly going to be busy,

G.R.S.
