Sports Day 1965

Third of July was the day chosen for this annual event, held this year at the Whitchurch Playing Fields. This was a departure from the usual venue of the Headstone Manor Track, and was also by way of an experiment. Having used Headstone for so many years, it did seem strange holding the sports in new surroundings, and it is debatable whether the experiment was entirely successful. Perhaps we must think again about the venue before next year.

Of the actual events there is little to record. Whilst events followed smoothly enough and the programme was completed in good time, only two new records were established - both in field events - and one existing record equalled. Times in all the track events were very disappointing and it must be the first year for a long while, that the track records have remained unchanged after sports day.

Campion emerged rather easy winners of the House Competition; Becket move into second place; Francis - winners last year - were third; whilst Gabriel – once a force to be respected - were fourth.

Points total:

Campion
Becket
Francis
Gabriel
313 pts.
240 pts.
212 pts.
158 pts.

Sports Day should be an exciting climax to the athletics season. For some reason it failed this year to live up to all that was expected. Perhaps, as this is only my view, I might be quite wrong, but there did appear to be something missing - atmosphere, excitement, call it what you will. I sincerely hope it returns next year to inspire competitors and spectators alike.

One final word of thanks to all who assisted and helped in any way - Staff, Parents and Boys - not forgetting the Staff at Whitchurch for their help and wonderful co-operation.
