Chess Club

Our Chess Club is again in full swing, although since September we have moved from Room 4 to Room 11. We have again a good membership list and games are played during lunch hour and from 4-5.30 on Friday evenings. The subscription is 6d. per term or 1s 4d. per year. All boys who join have a chance of playing for the school or for their house.

Chesswise, 1965-66 was a good year. Our Junior Team won the Harrow and District Schools' League and deserve full credit as they did not suffer a single defeat throughout the season. In the same league our Senior Team came fourth. The teams were:

Senior Junior
J. Sinclair (Captain) B. Taylor (Captain)
J. Rossi M. Flint
A. Shaw J. Howell
A. Thurnham M. Taylor
E. O'Gorman
A. Greenwood
Reserves: Reserves:
S. B. Jones J. Durcan
D. Moore D. Buck
Since our last report we have had two School v Parents' matches. Both were quite a success and we thank the parents who gave of their time and attended. Matches were contested much more keenly than perhaps the results show. Anyway, the score was 20-13 and 13½ -6½ in favour of the school. We hope to have a School v Parents' match again after Christmas. As well as members or the Senior and Junior Teams we were able to call on the following boys to play for the school against the parents: G. O'Hagan and C. Shepheard, Upper Sixth; J. Jones and R. Kerr, Lower Sixth; J.D. Burke, 5A; M. Nawrocki, 5S; D. Bradley, S. Devlin, A. Inglese, M. O'Gorman, 4X; M. Clements, J. Johnson, R. O'Connell, C. Green, P. Alliston, form 3; R. Gallagher, P. Grayell, B. Lynch, form 2.

Throughout the year we played a championship knock-out tournament, both in the senior and junior grades. John Sinclair won the Senior with A. Shaw runner up. Martin Flint won the Junior. Thanks are due to the F.S.C. who have made cups available for these events. These were presented to the winners during the second Parents v School chess evening. One cup, i.e. the winning house, has still to be contested.

For the '66-67 season there are seven schools in the Harrow and District League. To date we have played Hendon and won the Senior by 5-1 and Junior 4-0.

In the Sunday Times Tournament we have got our first team into the second round, having beaten Smallberry Green School, Isleworth 4½-l½. Our second team are to play Orange Hill First team in round 1 of the same tournament.

A simultaneous display was given in Harrow Chess Club by Mr. P. B. Lee, the British Champion and three boys went along from the school to play on 13th October. Congratulations to A. Shaw, 5A who defeated the Champion. Martin Flint and D. Buck played well before being defeated. The result of that meeting was Mr. Lee won 18, lost 3, drew 3.

We thank S. B. Jones and A. Greenwood of last year's Upper Sixth for the interest and work they did for the Chess Club. Our Secretary this year is A. Thurnham and Treasurer is J. Jones and they are doing a good job also. Mr. Towey again is 'Master in Charge' and Fr. Aloysius is results secretary.

Finally, we thank all whose names appear above as well as, in particular, those masters who provided transport for our various fixtures away and anyone else who helped towards our success of last year. We look forward to this, our fifth year since we began under the direction of Fr. Aloysius, as being even a better success than last year and with J. Rossi as captain of the Senior Team we would like to see the Senior Trophy in our School also.
