The Sixth Form Society

After a dormant year the Sixth Form Society has now burst onto the scene with renewed vigour and enthusiasm. For this we owe our thanks to Fr. Raymond and Mr. Shovelton, who have been only too willing to act as sponsors.

At the beginning of term a new committee was elected by the Sixth Form, with William McCarthy as President. Other committee members include Antony Thurnham, Vice-President; John Sinclair, Treasurer; and Patrick Devlin, Secretary, who are aided by three assistants.

The Society is trying to achieve a greater unity between members of the Upper and Lower Sixths, so that the younger members can benefit from the advice of their elders. It also hopes to give the individual a chance to develop and widen his cultural background. This will then enable the student, at the end of his Sixth Form education, to be socially as well as academically equipped to embark upon his career, or to go on to University.

Already the committee has obtained, with the help of Brother Alphonsus, a Common Room, where the Sixth can make coffee and read magazines during the lunch hour. In the future it is hoped to arrange trips to the theatre and also "coffee evenings" at which guest speakers will voice their opinions on current topics.

Soon the Society intends to run, in conjunction with the Sixth Form of the Sacred Heart, but as yet this is not definite.

Is now up to the student to make good use of the openings which are provided. If this is done then it will not only benefit him, but also enable the Sixth Form Society to operate successfully throughout the year.
