Youth Against Hunger Committee

This is the newest school society and really happened by chance. The Harrow 'Freedom from Hunger Campaign' held a 'teach-in' on 'World Hunger' on March 17th. It was a most interesting 'teach-in' and the guest speakers gave opinions as to the easing of this problem. Miss Erica Spinney of Youth Against Hunger H.Q. gave us many suggestions as to helping with the problem. The seven sixth-formers who attended went home and after some time I suggested, by way of conversation in the Library, that we form a Committee and involve the school. Fr. Dominic gave us his blessing and the bail was rolling.

The Sacred Heart Sixth form was asked if it would like to co-operate and a Committee of both schools was formed. It was decided to keep this activity within the sixth-form as an experiment and I am pleased to say that the response was most generous and the experiment was successful. We are, at present, helping a milk project in North East India at Vijayawada and helping the Harrow Scheme.

Later in the year Mr. Nigel Nicholson gave an illustrated lecture on the work of the United Nations in helping to combat disease, poverty and hunger and brought home to those present the urgency of the problem and its immensity.

To help swell funds a Dance was held on July 8th, with the music provided by 'The Mojos' and 'The Mode'. This dance was very successful and raised £35.

A raffle is planned for the end of term and the Committee looks forward to an active and generous year.
