Which famous astronomer is connected with the Battle of Hastings and why is this so? (The answer to this question can be found in the October 1966 issue of 'Hermes').
A carpenter, working with a circular saw, wishes to cut a wooden cube of side 3" into 27 1" cubes. He can do this obviously by making 6 cuts along the dotted lines. If he rearranges the pieces between cuts, can he achieve his end in fewer than 6 cuts?
Written answers to the above questions should be handed in to John Sinclair, Graham Wilde or Peter Downey. The first correct answers to be received will be displayed on the notice-board in the Mathematics Centre.
