Quiz

Which famous astronomer is connected with the Battle of Hastings and why is this so? (The answer to this question can be found in the October 1966 issue of 'Hermes').


Problem

A carpenter, working with a circular saw, wishes to cut a wooden cube of side 3" into 27 1" cubes. He can do this obviously by making 6 cuts along the dotted lines. If he rearranges the pieces between cuts, can he achieve his end in fewer than 6 cuts?
