Athletics Report

Sports Day was held on the 25th May - a Wednesday - at the Whitchurch Playing Fields and, need I add, as so often happens with our Sports Day, the heavens opened and we were deluged! In spite of the terrible conditions, however, the meeting and programme were carried through, though it meant a very wet afternoon for all concerned. As was only to be expected under such conditions, new records were something of a rarity but at least two were established - one in the 100 yds under 13 event; the other in the Senior Triple Jump, when R. Silver jumped 41 ft. 6 ins. - a magnificent effort in such very difficult conditions. I am afraid that the recollections of Sports Day are almost lost now (apart from a very abiding recollection of rows of boys in green lined up in pouring rain for the roll call!) and for this the weather was partially to blame; the fact that it was held on a weekday and that few parents were able to attend was another factor that detracted from its enjoyment. Since the Parents, and their enthusiasm over the years, has always contributed much to the success of the meeting, we all missed them very much. To those parents who did attend in such arctic conditions, we can only say - God bless you!

In the coming year Sports Day will revert to its old place on a SATURDAY. The date for your Diary is 20th May.

House Competition
GABRIEL 255 pts
Campion 247 pts
Francis 230 pts
Becket 187 pts

As can be seen from the table above the house championship was very close indeed in spite of a very determined effort by the holders - Campion.

With Sports Day being held so early, the main Athletics interest now lay with the inter-school fixtures. The results of these are listed below and in some cases they do not reflect the improving standard of Athletics in the school. Results never do tell the whole story and this is particularly so in Athletics. Many boys take part- in many cases the team may number as many as 40 boys-and all the record shows is the number of points gained. Nothing is shown of the effort, courage and strain, mental and physical, of the participants Athletics is tough and demanding but I hope that all who take part obtain a tremendous satisfaction and that each year they will have the courage to improve on their previous performances.
