Rugby

We have been playing Rugby at the school for three years, but it is only in the last season that the number of games have reached any reasonable proportion.

The school now fields three teams - 1st XV; U 16 XV and U 13 XV.

After Christmas it is hoped that two more teams will take the field - an U 15 XV and an occasional U 12 XV.

At present results are not too encouraging - we have not had a win this season. With the tremendous enthusiasm being shown in the game, however, we hope that the phenomenally large scores against us may be reduced to figures that we shall not be ashamed to hear read in the Assembly!

In many of the games our school forwards are a match for the opponents and in fact, sometimes superior to them. Our weakness lies in the threes - the handling is poor and there is great weakness in defence.

We are NOT discouraged with our poor results because we realise that the new approach and the new skills to be learnt in this game - so far superior to the 'other game'- can only be accomplished by patience and practice. Too often the ball is being fly-kicked when it would be much better were it picked up.

When we play against schools who have a longer standing rugby tradition, we must be ready to learn from them and apply the lessons learnt from the team game after game. In short we must become RUGBY players and not converted soccer players.
