Swimming Gala

The 3rd Annual Swimming Gala was held at Highgrove Baths, Ruislip on Saturday 7th May. A fairly good attendance by many parents was most gratifying and all seemed to enjoy the entertainment provided for them. It should also be stressed that the boys also enjoyed themselves, and in the excellent facilities offered at Highgrove, this was not surprising. The programme was varied if somewhat limited and in the final points tally Becket beat Gabriel by a mere 9 points. It was a very refreshing experience and was made more so by the actual refreshments provided by the Friends Association, to whom we are most grateful.

It would be unjust to pass over the subject of swimming without paying tribute to the excellent work of Mr. Eric Martin. The fact that nearly ninety per cent of the boys at the school can now swim and that each week some 150 boys regularly visit the pool, is not only a tribute to his enthusiasm and patience, but a fitting reward to his insistence that every child should at east be able to look after himself in the water. Many boys have gained the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards of the Amateur Swimming Association. Many more have won confidence after an initial nervousness and I am sure that the remaining ten per cent, under his guidance and gentle influence, will soon feel as much at home in the water as on the Sports field.
