Chess Club

The Chess Club is in its sixth year and is in full swing once again. At the start of the current term we moved from the throes of Room 11 to the Geography room where games can be played in comparative peace from 1 to 1.50 during the lunch break, and from 4 to 5.30 on Friday evenings. The subscription is 6d per term or 1/3d per year.

In 1966/67 the Junior team were winners of the Harrow and District Schools' League - a repeat of last year's victory - but this time the trophy was shared with Harrow County Boys on a tied score. The Senior team also did well in their section of the league, reaching the fourth spot - the highest that they have attained to date.

The teams for 1966/67 were:-
SENIOR
J. Rossi (Captain)
A. Shaw
A. Thurnham
D. Moore
E. O'Gorman
A. Burke

Reserves:
S. Roguski

As in previous years, we entered the Sunday Times tournament, this year with two teams. The first team did well to get into the third round before being knocked out. In the first two rounds we beat Smallberry Green, Isleworth 4½ - 1½ and Acton County 4½ - 1½. In the third round we went down to Battersea Grammar School, which was for from being a disgrace as this team went on to win the Final of the Tournament. So we have had the consolation, at least, of being beaten by the best Chess School in Britain. Our second team went out, unfortunately, in the first round to Orange Hill by the wide margin of 6 - 0.

The School Championships were contested on a knockout basis, both in the Senior and Junior sections. The Senior Championship was between A. Shaw and M. Flint. It was an outstanding performance by Flint who succeeded, in the path to the Final, in knocking out the reigning Champion - J. Sinclair. The Junior Championship was won by Flint with R. Durcan runner-up.

In the Summer term the House Championships were held, Becket being the eventual winners. M Flint and B. Lynch played in the Harrow Junior Shield, held at Harrow Chess Club. Flint came joint fifth overall and won the Under-14 prize. Since the last report we have not had any Parents v Boys matches, but two are due in the near future and we look forward to these being the success they have always been.

In the current year we have made a good start in the Harrow and District League. Both our Senior and Juniors have been successful over Pinner and Kingsbury. Once again we have entered the Sunday Times Tournament and have been drawn in our first game against Harrow County.
