The
Lambton
Worm

According to legends the Lambton Worm was a fearsome reptile that terrorized the town of Lambton
in Durham. A witch told a young squire who was determined to destroy this beast, how to
accomplish the task; but she made him promise at the same time to kill the first living thing
he met afterwards, or a curse would be put on his family. Unhappily the first person he met
after he had vanquished the Worm was his father. He could not bring himself to kill his father,
so the curse lay on the family for nine generations.
