The Lincolnshire Doctor

When a Lincolnshire doctor was imprisoned for witchcraft, a poor Wansford Bridge shepherd boy helped him to escape. In return for this great kindness the doctor said he would give the shepherd some advice which would enable him to do an even greater act of mercy. "Next time you see a silver ring round the moon" he said, "drive your sheep into the church and climb the tower".

The shepherd did and from the church tower he saw a tidal wave sweeping across the country-side. He rang the church bell with all his might and warned the townsfolk of the danger, thus saving their lives.
