Injuries affected a number of team members at different times but, in spite of this, results in competitions were excellent. The Steeplechase made its entry into the events on Sports Day; this leaves the Pole Vault and the Hammer the only events still to be attempted -- perhaps next year.
Sports Day was held early in May and, although the weather was rather wet, the whole programme was carried through. It was pleasing to see so large a number of Parents and Friends attend it. The Inter House Competition resulted in a win for Campion with 336 points, Francis got 292, Becket 288 and Gabriel 204.
In the District Sports our combined U.15 and U.17 teams finished second with 79 points; the U.19s got the same placing in their section with 53 points. As a result of this meeting the following were chosen to represent Harrow in the County Sports held in June at Copthall Stadium: G. Carroll, 880 yds Junior; D. Butler, Junior Long Jump; M. Doyle, 100 yds Intermediate; L. Wheeler, 440 yds. Intermediate; A. Ferry, Intermediate High Jump; P. Wismayer, Intermediate Shot; A. Woolford, Senior Mile; M. Coughlan, Senior High Jump; M. Naurocki, Senior Long Jump.
In the Harrow Athletics League for 2nd and 4th Years, our 2nd Year team finished second with 62 points and the 4th Year team came fourth with 52½ points. This league was a venture in Harrow and to qualify for the finals meeting, the teams had to take part in three previous meetings. Both our teams are to be congratulated on a very good effort.
In the Grammar Schools Area Competition, we managed to improve our rating by getting fourth place this year. The total score of 130 was gained by the Seniors getting 40 points, the Intermediates 41, Juniors 33 and the Minors 16 points. There are only five events for Minors, this explains why their score is low in comparison with the others. For the first time in this Competition, the School had a representative in nearly all the track finals; this means that competitors had to get through the heats in the morning. The only way to get points is by being represented in the finals and the boys certainly did their bit - especially Willy Fitzgerald who stormed through the 220 yds Junior heats to set a new School record of 25.6 secs. Yet he had to be content with second place in the final that afternoon.
In the Inter-Borough Meet against Hounslow, the following 2nd Year boys represented Harrow; J. Anderson - 100 yards; M. O'Sullivan - Mile; R. Jasieniecki - 100 yds and Shot; J. Powell - Javelin; M. Moore - 800 yds and Discuss. R. Carroll was selected For the 220 yds and High Jump but was prevented by injury from competing.
The table of match results gives an indication of the all round ability for each age group.
The 1st Year, despite the overall result, were a little disappointing.
