1st XI Report
A season which saw the School 1st XI starting off very well in the Autumn term, when nine of the
fifteen games played were won and only four lost. After Christmas in the second half of the
season things did not go so well, and of the eighteen games played six were won, six drawn, and
six were lost. I feel, however, that if the season is taken as a whole, then a picture emerges
of a team effort which brought good results. Once again we failed to beat the Old Salvatorians
1st XI losing 6-1, and Greenford County knocked us out of the Grammar Schools competition 2-1.
Back: Wheeler, Doyle, Hocking, Power, Barrett, Gillespie, Pennicott, Redican.
Front: Brennan, Coughlan, Murray, Mangan (Captain), Dury.
During the Easter holidays a party of thirteen boys and two members of Staff made a tour of
Norfolk where three matches were played. Two were drawn and the other lost - though I feel
these results do not reflect a true picture, for with just a little luck, both drawn matches
could so easily have been won. The host Schools on the tour were, Downham Market Secondary -
draw 2-2, King Edward VI, Kings Lynn lost 1-3, and Fakenham Grammar - draw 3-3.
Peter Mangan captained the team for the second year, and Henry Murray and David Dury played for
the Catholic Schools in a Christmas tour of Malta. David was also chosen for the Easter party
and played in a tournament in France.

One final point; the number of games played throughout the season was the highest ever for the
School 1st XI and the results the best yet.
