During the rural traverse, soil samples were taken. The soil was put into plastic bags to be
taken back to the college, being careful not to handle the soil thus altering its pH value.
Each sample was then put into a test tube with distilled water. The addition of universal
indicator brought about a colour change which could be compared with a standard colour card
to give a pH reading of acidity or alkalinity. Nearly all the samples turned the indicator
green which gave a reading of pH 4 to 4.5, leading to the conclusion that the soils between
Tring and Aylesbury were generally of a more alkaline nature.
