Social Action Group

The Social Action Group was instituted in September 1968 and is one of the newest School societies. It was formed by some members of the Lower Sixth in con junction with their opposite numbers from the Sacred Heart School, with the intention of doing "good works", in the widest sense, for people in need. The membership originally was about thirty, about equally divided between the two schools, though by the end of the year the number was almost halved, about a third of that number being girls.

The "powers that be" in the School were especially helpful, and meetings were arranged to coincide with what would have been classes in Religious Education. After fierce debate, it decided that members should work in pairs, and find time to visit needy old folk at least once a week. This was accomplished with reasonable success.

During the winter, when it was snowing heavily, it was thought that many old people might need help clearing their pathways, getting in fuel, shopping, etc. So, when any "free period occurred, groups of boys set off to various parts of Harrow and Wealdstone to give what assistance they could to those in need. Helpers included many who were not members of the Group, but felt they would like to join in the work.

In the Summer Term, someone suggested that we should visit some spastic children at St. Vincent's Hospital at North Hills. This was agreed upon, and on Wednesday afternoons we set-out from the School to visit them. We travelled in a van, owned by one of the group, until it become "unroadworthy", then we had to depend on cars borrowed from parents; there were always the lucky few who had motorbikes. All a the children were confined to wheelchairs, and we brought them around the Hospital grounds, played games with them, and frequently brought them on longer outings past the golf course and down to the park. The amount of pleasure they derived from our visits was almost unbelievable, and that made our visits most rewarding.
