Football Report 1968/69

Fortunes on the football field for the College in this season were mixed, and success, which should have followed a good 67/68 season, did not materialize for most teams The U 15s, who had an excellent run in the Middlesex Senior Schools Competition, were a notable exception to this, but they lost to a very good Somerset School team in the final. The 1st XI very soon lost interest in the Tye and Middlesex Senior Schools Competition, going out in the first round of both competitions; they were knocked out of the Ebdon Competition in the second round.

The 1st XI had a very disappointing season and failed to produce the results that should have been forthcoming from a team of such undoubted ability. They started off rather badly, recovered towards the end of the Autumn Term, and then seemed to lose all interest when games recommenced after a long lay-off due to grounds being unplayable during January and February. It was not, by any means, a good season for the First Eleven.

The Seconds played with their usual enthusiasm, and made up in this way what may have been lacking in skill. Replacements for the First often upset their team selection, but nevertheless they soldiered on.

The 16s were drawn from the 1st and 2nd Elevens and played on Saturday afternoons in the Harrow Youth League. They displayed such skill that they won the Championship, and in the Cup were runners up to South Vale Glacier. They also won the U 16s Competition for Harrow Schools, beating Blackwell 4 - 2 in the final.

The 15s were rather disappointingly beaten by Harrow Weald in the Brady Cup Competition for Harrow Schools. However they made amends, as already mentioned, by their fine performance in the Middlesex Senior Schools Competition; despite the score, they were by no means disgraced in the final.

The 14s suffered from a slight hangover after their successful season in 67/68; perhaps it was due to the fact they were, in some cases, physically smaller than those playing against them. They lost to Harrow Weald in the local competition, but gained revenge by beating them 5 - 4 in the local League final.

The 13s had an average season, losing to Blackwell in the Cup, 5 - 2, and the League semi-final to Harrow Weald. A temperamental bunch here, and some of them found it difficult to get up on a Saturday morning.

This was a malady which at times, also hit the U 12s, and one from which it is hoped they will recover next season. They redeemed themselves by reaching the final of the local cup competition, but lost 8 - 3 to a better Blackwell team.

For the record, the 1st XI beat an Old Salvatorian XI by the large margin of 10 - 2, little credit here to the Old Boys, and a School XI beat the Staff 2 - 1 in an entertaining end of the season match.

No record is complete without mention, and thanks, to those members of Staff responsible for the teams. Without them it would be impossible to print the following table of team records.
