Boxing

It is the infant sport as far as support and competitions is concerned, but the club is gradually finding its feet under the watchful eye of Mr. Dobson. Last February the Boxing Club had the biggest boost that it could possibly hope for, with successes in a number of major tournaments.

The College was represented by the two Hayes brothers, Cliff and Ron, in the Middlesex Junior Boxing Championships. Cliff was entered in the U. 13 age group in the U. 8st. 41b. weight limit, while brother Ron in the U. 15's checked in at 11st. 5lb.

Since there were no other entrants in his particular group in the area, Cliff went straight through to the finals, where he succeeded in stopping his opponent in the second round, thus becoming Middlesex U. 13 champion. Unfortunately a great family and school success was prevented when Ron was stopped in the final of his age group.

After this great feat by our almost completely inexperienced fighters, an even greater personal triumph was to come. Cliff, being Middlesex champion, represented the county in the Home Counties play-off. Once again, his opponent was unable to attend, and Cliff received a walkover and marched into the last 8 in Great Britain.

Travelling North for the quarter-finals, Cliff at last met someone to box, and with great jubilation stopped his opponent in the third and final round. The semi-finals were played later that same day, and after putting up a great fight Cliff was unlucky to lose on points. But congratulations must be given to both Cliff and Ron on getting as far as they did, thus giving the Club a moral boost and something to aim for in the future. Thanks are also due to Mr. Dobson, without whose valuable coaching these exceptionally good results could never have been obtained.
