It was quite an achievement for the U.16s to reach the final of the Middlesex Schools Rodwell
Trophy, and having got that far, their defeat by Sion School, Hounslow on Brentford F.C. ground
was something of an anti-climax. To reach the Final was a wonderful achievement and they
recorded some good victories to get that far. Who would have thought it possible that a 2-0
deficit in the semi-final could be turned into a 3-2 victory by full time? Their presence in
the final was gained on merit, but Sion proved themselves to be worthy opponents. They took
control right from the start and gave our defence quite a testing time. Heroic work kept them
out until about five minutes from half time, and as so often happens this reverse acted like a
spur. Although the lads fought back they were unable to make anything of the chances that came
their way and, just before the end, a second goal settled the game in Sion's favour. They proved
themselves to be the better team and were worthy winners.
On Saturday afternoons many of the lads played in the Harrow Youth League as the Old
Salvatorians. It would be true to say that they had an indifferent season, finishing
in third place in the U.16 League and losing in the second round of the cup, 4-1 to
Tansley. The value of this team lay in the fact that it provided the opportunity for
some lads to play football who were unable to get into School teams. As a result, I
hope that many will continue to play in the coming seasons for the Old Salvatorians,
like so many of their predecessors.
