Swimming

Not a great deal of competition in this sport due, really, to little being organised in the area. Teams took part in the Youth Gala and the Schools Gala. The John Vinton Trophy for Swimming was won by Cliff Cahill.

Swimming Gala 20th February 1971

An innovation at this year's Gala was the introduction of two races at every age group, which was done with the object of making sure that it was a truly inter-House competition. Each House was asked to provide two swimmers for each event or lose points for failing to do so. As it turned out, the eventual winners BECKET failed to score in only four races, and in this fact lies the secret of their success. Over 110 competitors took part in the Gala the largest number ever - but it was a disappointment to note that the majority of these were boys from the 1st - 4th years, and that once again the Gala failed to attract the whole-hearted support of the 5th and 6th years. The House Committees did their best to ensure representation in all races, but unless everyone is prepared to come along and support, then the Gala will fail to be the complete success it has every right to be. All times established this year for events were taken as School records, so that in future, competitors have the added incentive of establishing new records. New events this year, the BUTTERFLY races which were well supported, especially in view of the fact that this is not the easiest of strokes to master. The final races of the evening were the RELAYS at every age group, and they proved to be a very exciting finale to the evening's sport.

BECKET - finished in 1st position with 300 pts;
GABRIEL - winners over the past three years were 2nd with 278 pts;
CAMPION - were 3rd with 265 pts; and
FRANCIS - who failed to get any support at 6th Form level finished 4th with 252 pts.
