Sports Day

What can be said about this year's Sports? It was after all a lovely May day with not a rain cloud in sight. It was well attended - by the boys that is - for, as it was held on a Friday, then parents for the most part were unable to come. It was truly an Inter-House competition, each House entering two competitors in each event and as a result, over 200 boys took part. 28 events had the full complement of 8 competitors and 30 had either 7 or 6 competitors. Performances were reasonable in view of the time - little preparation being possible since the term had only been going for two weeks. The House Committees had done an excellent job and by gentle persuasion or other means, got the message home that participation meant points for the House. No competitor meant no points. So, bearing all these facts in mind, it should have been a sports day 'par excellance'. But I could not help feeling that the absence of parents and friends took away from the day and so perhaps next year some thought must be given to making it possible for them to attend as in the past.
Because of the changes that have taken place over the past few years in athletic measurements - metres taking over from yards and this year new weights in Shot, Discus and Javelin as well as new heights in Hurdles, School records have tended to be overlooked. However, the changes are now complete and a list of School records is in the process of being compiled.

The final count of points showed the BECKET finished on top to complete a double, having already won the Swimming Gala earlier on in February. They improved on their third position of the previous year, and won deservedly by the margin of l9pts. from the former holders CAMPION. GABRIEL dropped down from second place to third whilst FRANCIS for the second year running were firmly anchored at the bottom.
