Art Department Report

During the course of the year considerable progress has been made in the Art field1 and I was particularly pleased at the high standard of draughtsmanship throughout the department. I was also gratified by the ease that most students absorbed a new approach to abstract art and basic design.

There were a number of art visits during the year, including trips to the National and Tate Galleries. The two main visits, however, were to Coventry Cathedral in the winter term and Oxford and the Cotswolds in the summer. This year's programme will include additional visits to the London Galleries already mentioned, plus a visit to the Royal Academies Summer Exhibition. These visits have been restricted to the Upper School in the main, but some third form students have also participated.

The department has also been pleased to assist with posters and props for school productions during the year, and have also contributed to the 'Royal Hunt of the Sun', our Jubilee production.

Work over the past twelve months has been almost exclusively two dimensional, but the pottery section is now re-established, at least for the Sixth form.

It gave me particular pleasure that the department was commended by the governors, and I hope that the art department will live up to the high standard expected of the college in future.

Also, during the winter term two students from St Marys College assisted in the Art department. They were most conscientious in their work and I trust they gleaned some benefit from their experiences.

Additional contributions have been
a. Decor in the dining hall for Christmas festivities
b. Decor in the dining hall for Jubilee festivities
c. Display of art work at the Jubilee exhibition
d. Exhibition of art work during open evening
e. Display of 0 and A examination work in the art department

Finally the next few years are likely to see considerable changes, but given the co-operation of some quite excellent students, the Department should flourish.
