Cricket - Holland Tour

The 1st XI cricket tour to Holland in August 1977 was successful more for the enjoyable time had by all than for cricketing fixtures. We travelled to the Hook of Holland from Harwich and the unfair distribution of the two cabins saw some twelve of us in one cabin and four others (including captain and manager) in the other. We continued by road to Rotterdam for our first game at V 0 C.

We batted first and, after a steady start, collapsed and were all out for 120. Tight bowling by John Gibbons and some missed chances helped to prolong the game as we lost by eight wickets.

The second game at Utrecht lost much time to rain and was finally turned into an overs match. Good batting by Angelo Rigali and some useful support gave us a good chance, which was helped by good bowling from John Gibbons and Ron Feeney. We lost the closest game of the tour in the last over by four wickets, but with a bit more luck we may have won.

The third game was cancelled because of rain and the last game saw the original side replaced by another side at V 0 C. This included two Dutch internationals and we were slightly outclassed as one of them peppered a nearby canal with cricket balls. But the last batting performance by the side as a whole saw us gain our highest score of the tour. Useful scores were recorded by Angelo Rigali, Peter Robinson and John Gibbons, but we still lost by some 90 runs.

The trip home resulted in Tony Dockrell swearing never to set foot on a boat or foreign soil again due to seasickness. But generally, everyone enjoyed themselves and thanks to our Dutch hosts have been expressed since, for their friendliness and hospitality.
