Practical Economics

costs of different modes of transport
During our Practical Economics course with Mr. Page a project to compare the cost of different modes of transport in London was carried out. We gathered from local sources the relevant information on taxis, minicabs and public transport rate. After calculating for ourselves what it would cost to run a private car, we converted all our figures into a form suitable for graphical presentation.

The results were enlightening; For the single person not travelling more than seven and a half miles a private car would be the cheapest form of travel but if a longer journey was envisaged catching a bus or going by tube would be cheaper.

Overall the taxi is the most expensive mode of travel but by going with friends the cost could be dramatically cut - four people in a taxi being able to travel more cheaply than by using public transport for the first one and a half miles.

Four people travelling less than five and a quarter miles would find it cheaper to hire a minicab than to catch the bus or the tube. Finally, it should be stated that our findings are valid only with respect to our particular figures which we hope are a fair reflection of those generally prevailing.
