The Royal Hunt Of The Sun (2)

1976, being the Golden Jubilee year of the School, it was fitting that the Drama Society's production, "The Royal Hunt of the Sun", should be such a great success. The local press could barely fault it and comments on it by the staff and pupils were generally favourable.

Approximately one hundred pupils were involved in this production, seventy of these being the cast. It is pleasing to see that the Drama Society can attract such widespread interest, whether on the acting or the technical side. Hopefully this will continue in the future.

Of course the mammoth cast created its own particular problems and much of the time and effort had to be spent on such scenes as the massacre and the ritual planting and harvest by the peasants, in which timing and co-ordination were very important. Indeed the directors commented afterwards that coping with the problems posed by these and similar scenes hindered them from assisting actors in character study as much as they would have liked.

But in the end the play ran smoothly, with very few hitches. It provided an excellent test for actors, producers and stage-crew. It can only be hoped that the forthcoming production, Oliver Goldsmith's "She Stoops to Conquer" will reflect the high standard set last year.
