Drama Society

The past two years have been exciting and varied ones for the Drama Society. If Peer Gynt seemed ambitious in its size and scope The Royal Hunt of the Sun seemed even more of a challenge. Between these two giant productions was a small cast modern comedy set in Roman Times, "The Brass Butterfly" by William Golding. "The Royal Hunt" was followed by a classical 18th Century comedy, "She Stoops To Conquer", in which the Salvatorian College once again happily co-operated with the Sacred Heart Grammar School. The mannered comedy was new ground to the Drama Society but the results seemed to please both the participants and the audience.

The problem for Christmas 1977 was how to follow such a successful and varied group of plays particularly as we now had a very experienced group of actors. Shakespeare is never far from the minds of the producers and the Drama Society has happy memories of three successful productions of Shakespeare comedies. So it was that after trips to Stratford and the Aldwych to see the current Royal Shakespeare production of "Much Ado About Nothing", the producers decided that this would be the Drama Society's Christmas offering.

The producers did not realize it at the start, but this was perhaps to be their most difficult production. Only on the first night were Mr. Crawford and Mr. Tufnell satisfied that they had chosen wisely and the play really was up to the high standard of previous productions. By the last night it was obvious from the reactions and comments of audiences that this was one of the most enjoyable and successful productions undertaken by the Drama Society.
