table tennis

A Jubilee edition is perhaps an opportunity to record the successes achieved over the years since 1964. A Grand Total of twenty six wins! The U.13. 4-a-side team reached the National Final to finish third in all England in 1971-72. The most successful year was 1975-76 when we won every school team County Competition except the U.19 4-a-side.

In the present season 1977-78 the U.19 team of Rodney O'Mahony, Peter Wells, Brian English and John Cawley narrowly lost in the South and East of England Final, having won the County and South-East Counties Finals. We also reached the County Final at U.16 (Wells, English, Cawley and Kevin Cawley) and the Semi Final at U.13 (A.King, P.O'Brien, J.Earls and P.Wizbek).

In the 3-a-side competition we should reach the Finals at all ages i.e. U.19, U.16, and U.14.

The School annual championships attracted the usual high entry well over one third take part and throng the Gym for weeks afterwards emulating the Chinese and practising for next year. In the U.19 competition Rodney O'Mahony beat John Cawley, and Peter Wells beat Brian English in the Semi-finals. The Final saw some good table tennis with fine rallies that drew applause from spectators. O'Mahony won the first game 21-14; Wells the second 21-9: Wells staged an amazing comeback from 10-2 down to win 22-20 in the third and took the fourth 21-15 to confound the pre-match tipsters.

In the Under 16 competition John Cawley beat Liam Doherty 24-22, 21-16; and Kevin Cawley beat John Knight 21-18, 21-19 in the Semi-finals. In the Final both players appeared somewhat nervous but gradually settled though neither really showed their best form. John won the first 21-11, Kevin the second and third 21-13 and 21-17 and appeared to be on top. John seemingly decided it was time to put younger brother in his place and not without difficulty won the last two games 21-13, 21-13.

In the Under 14 competition Anthony King beat Liam Melinn 28-26, 21-19 and Paul O'Brien beat John Earls 21-9, 9-21, 21-9 in the semi-finals. In the Final while there was some good play Anthony King appeared to be still recovering from a recent bout of 'flu' and Paul O'Brien won 21-17, 21-13 and 21-16.

A final word of appreciation - to Father Dominic to the "Friends" for the very expensive item, namely good tables, to the many members of staff who have helped with transport to distant parts, none more so than Mr.Hartin an unfailing source of help and enthusiasm.
