Ruins

Upon a hill, not far from here
There stands the ruins
Of a castle built long ago.

Once it stood up proudly,
Casting a dark silhouette,
As the sun set behind it
With daunting walls,
And impregnable gates
It seemed like strength itself.

Once it was powerful
And living;
Its walls echoed to the
Sound of horses and men.

But now,
Age has proved too great
An enemy for it,
And it stands defeated,
Its walls shattered,
Its towers collapsed.

So now it is dead
And, inside the shattered walls
There is only silence;
Except for the sound of the wind
Blowing gently through the ruins.
