The Toad

In the calm and stagnant water,
Perched upon a lily pad
Sat a slimy warty monster,
Chewing on the flies he'd had.
As I watched his eyes of green,
Surveying the pond's summer scene,
A fly up near his mouth did spot,
And to this he did put a stop.

But in the grass near where I stayed,
A grass snake slipped past each green blade.
To where the waters edge did lay,
And slipped into the bluish grey.
To where the Toad did sit and gaze.
And then in one fast movement made.
The Toad was gonefrom the lily glade,
And the grass snake slipped away.
