Cricket - Under 14s 1980 Season

This years U 14 cricket team is basically the same as the U 13's team of last year which won seven, lost five and drew one of its twelve matches, except for the addition of Paul Mulligan as wicketkeeper.

The opening partnership of Hassett and Davis remains, with Ian Pearson, Mick Wynne and Derek Vaz in the middle order. The bowling is strong with Pearson, Jeremy Davis and Martin Sheldon forming the pace attack, with Hassett in reserve as an extra fast bowler in case of injury or unavailability; Shaun Gray bowling medium pace (he took a hat trick last season); and Paul Watson bowling leg spin. If an off spinner could be found to partner him the attack would be perfectly balanced.

The fielding is good with several players specialising in certain positions, such as Jeremy Davis at slip where he has taken some great catches. Stuart Waldron is a fine all round fielder who ran out two people in his first match against Nower Hill last season. He has also taken some very good catches in close-catching positions. Mick Wynne usually gets the boundary fielding because of his powerful and accurate throw (he ran out a batsman with a direct throw when we played Bishopsholt this season), while the captain has made the silly mid off portion his own, and has taken many catches there off weak defensive pushes by the batsman.

At the time of writing our record this season is: played six; won two; drawn two; and lost two. Notable performances this season were Davis's 5 for 7 against Finchley as we bowled them out for 40, to win by 22 runs, thus ending their two year old unbeaten record. Against Gayton, Hassett scored 60, including two sixes and 14 off one over from the opposing captain. A fine partnership between Mick Wynne and Ian Pearson turned defeat into victory after three wickets had gone quickly against John Lyon in the Middlesex Cup.

Further good batting by Ian - this time with Hassett - almost won the match against Bishopsholt in the Middlesex Cup 2nd round as the pair put on an undefeated partnership at 66. We finished at 92 for 3, however, chasing 112 all out.

So we are out of the Middlesex Cup but we still have a very good chance of winning the Harrow Cup which commences after the half term.
