Co-operation in school during hard times (CONTINUED)
“We welcome to the staff this year Mrs. Gates to the French department: Mr King as head of biology: Mr. M’cormack (spelling) to history: and Mr. Smyth to assist with geography and economics. We hope that their stay with us will be long and fruitful.

“Proof of the unstinting efforts of the staff in spite of so many problems is seen in the examination results recently to hand. At the Advanced level examinations we have an overall 85 per cent pass rate with five pupils having Grade A in all three subjects. Out of the total passes of 142, 30 were at Grade A and 33 at Grade B. To date 22 have been accepted at universities: six are going to Oxford or Cambridge: seven to polytechnics: four have decided to have the year off before going up to university while others have gone to the Royal Navy, police, banking, insurance, law, quantity surveying, television and management courses.

“We have heard recently that two of our past pupils - John Snelling took a first at Ulster and is going up to Balliol: Dennis took a first at Kings and is going up to Christ Church: Patrick Hooks also starts at Oxford this term, and Gerard Hill at Cambridge.

“The O-level examinations produced an overall pass rate of 74 per cent bringing us a first year Sixth of 70 pupils for the arts and sciences.

“It was a very satisfactory year for the Friends of the Salvatorian College in which several new ventures were tried. “There is real concern expressed by the pupils over those in need and this came right to our doorstep with the death of the Hurleys. The boys responded with the usual generosity, and a cheque for £138 was sent to this fund. Shelter was again the main charity and £474.16 was raised.       (CONTINUED ...)
