The Debating Society

Since the beginning of January the school Debating Society has been thriving under the directives of Mr. Cornes and the 'Arts' side of the Sixth Form.

The society has received much enthusiastic support from the school in general, so that now we have upwards of fifty permanent members and many other visitors who pop in now and again to see what goes on behind the locked doors of the Physics Lecture Room.

The year's debates were given a brilliant send-off by the Sixth who, considering their stagnant state of mind, put up a good show, taking into consideration that the subject of the Debate was “Conscription”. The Debate was well supported and there were no violent incidents or slashing of seats, and the prefects managed to slink out of the back door before being lynched by the mob. A debate on the reintroduction of capital punishment, which was carried by 21 votes to 7.

Perhaps the most exciting debate was the one on examinations which the masters attended 'en masse' but the house decided, in spite of the moral force brought to bear by the staff, that examinations were undoubtedly an unfair test of ability, although there were no suggestions as to what would replace them.

It is hoped that a new series of debates and lectures will start in the near future.
