Cross Country

The Cross-Country season drew to a close with the House and Individual Competitions taking place just before the Easter holidays. The House competition proved to be very exciting and the results in both Senior and Junior events were very close. Full results below: -

Junior Race.
1st Campion 56 pts.; 2nd Francis 66 pts.; 3rd Gabriel 74 pts.; 4th Becket 123 pts.

Senior Race.
1st Francis 62 pts.; 2nd Campion 67 pts.; 3rd Becket 68 pts.; 4th Gabriel 107 pts.

SENIOR CROSS-COUNTRY 1960-61

Standing: A. Clifford; P. Mellins; A. Rixon; Fr. Louis.
Seated: P. Scott; R. Freeman; T. Brown.

In the Individual competitions the results were very much as expected but the conditions - a cold day with slight drizzle, made record breaking nigh impossible. There were 44 runners in the Junior race and 14 in the Senior. There could easily have been many more in the Senior but the spirit of participation seemed strangely lacking - a frustrating feature when one realises that there was no lack of ability.

The Junior race was won by Miller in 15.10 secs.; Flockton was 2nd in 15.23; O'Shea 3rd in 15.46.

The Senior Race was won by Cummins in 18 min. 16 secs.; Brain was 2nd in 18.25; Nolan 3rd in 20.27.

(Junior record: 14 mins. 8.6 secs.; Senior record 17 mins. 30 secs.)

In the Annual Inter-Schools race at Watford promoted by St. George's School, we had a Junior and Senior team entered as usual. We went to the Competition as holders of the Senior Cup and returned as Holders of the Junior Cup. In the Senior Race we came in 5th.

  JUNIOR CROSS-COUNTRY
JOHNSON CUP WINNERS 1961

P. Harrington; D. O'Leary; T. O'Shea; K. Flockton; Fr. Louis;
D. Miller; C. Clubbe; S. Handley.

The Junior team put up a fine performance and placings of, 1, 2, 3, 10, 24 and 25 gave us a final total of 65 points, a lead of 5 points over Harrow High. Ten Schools took part in the Junior Race and to have the first three places was a very fine achievement. Congratulations to the team on their victory and may these same runners bring many more trophies to the school in the years ahead.

Junior Team:-
Miller 1; Handley 2; Flockton 3: Clubbe 10; Harrington 24; O'Shea 25.

Miller and Handley returned the same time of 21 mins. 10 secs.; Flockton came 3rd in 21.15.

The Seniors found the competition very tough and though their packing was good it was too low to leave any hope of retaining the Cup. The boys did their best and a special word of thanks is due to Mellins who came into the team on the morning of the race and ran over a course that was entirely new to him.

Senior Team:- Scott 10; Freeman 20; Brown 23; Clifford 26; Rixon 27; Mellins 48.
