Football
Under 12's

History has been made in the school before; many reading this will perhaps say - "But when I was there we won so and so" - yet no one can say that he was at school when the Salvatorians reached the final of the Harrow Schools Cox Shield. This competition was open to the Harrow Schools Under 12 teams, and we were drawn against very stiff opposition in the Final, none other than our old rivals - Chandos. True we had in the past been represented in two Under 15 finals, drawing one and winning the other - our only successes after years of trial for boys and P.E. staff. In this competition we had started at the bottom, right at the bottom, and while the optimists felt that we had a useful team, the pessimists wondered whether it would be strong enough to bring us victory. We knew that the boys would play their hearts out rather than let us down. They played their hearts out and didn't let us down.

As one fortunate enough to see the Brady Cup Final of two years ago, I can honestly say that this was more thrilling and kept everyone on his toes until the final whistle. The winning goal only came ONE minute from the end, and all agreed that the spectators had their money's worth. Chandos proved worthy rivals and if only they had taken their chances would surely have won the match. But goals count and it was our three to their two that decided the match. On this memorable night all the team played well, though they were sluggish in settling down and gave Chandos the chance to open the scoring and gain a lead they maintained until half-time. Then in a sudden raid with the ball bobbing about like a cork, Miller applied an unerring boot that sped the ball into the back of the Chandos net.

HARROW AND DISTRICT UNDER 12'S SCHOOLS CHAMPIONS 1961

Standing:
Headmaster; Mr. Hartin; D. O'Leary; D. Miller; P. Ratcliffe; S. Handley; J. Walsh; P. McGovern; Fr. Louis.

Seated:
E. O'Gorman; P. Hind; P. Griffiths; P. Kelly; R. Arduino.

In Front:
S. Wilson; R. Devitt.

Renewed pressure from both forward lines marked the opening of the second half. Last minute saves by both goalkeepers were necessary to keep the score level. Then the Salvos took the lead; a high free kick by Handley for a foul just outside the penalty area was headed by a Chandos defender towards his own goal when Arduino pounced on it like a hungry cat on a well-fed mouse and placed it in the net. The cheering applause had scarcely died when the opposing inside right took advantage of a defence muddle and levelled the scores. Now we really saw the spirit of our boys. The forwards got moving down the left flank where Arduino and Kelly combined well, while in defence Handley, McGovern and O'Leary were towers of strength. Suddenly there arose from a (million?) throats a cheer that could only mean victory. Miller had scored his second goal of the match and the winning goal of the game. The spectators who cheered so loudly and long had got their reward. Green blazers were swarming over the field. Griffiths was hoisted high in the air and there was about the scene something of a cup final at Wembley. Among the spectators was Mr. Hartin who had laboured so well with this team and who through the years had given such encouragement, instilled such enthusiasm into the boys that we were glad of his gladness.

(P.S. Fr. Louis has recovered from his laryngitis!)
