Celebrities At Salvo ... Or Not

Anybody remember around 69-70 when Dana was supposed to be on in the hall ... but not sure if she ever turned up ... (the Irish Dana not that strange half-breed Israeli Eurovision lady-boy)
(Martin Coleman 71-76)

I have it in mind that Dana was due to open the school fete in about 1970. Word of her expected arrival inflated the attendance dramatically. She failed to turn up and probably was an innocent party in one of the school's greatest marketing cons ever.
(John Kennedy 69-76)

I find it hard to believe that Dana's agent would have Salvo garden fete on her world-wide tour agenda in the Summer of '70. This period would have been her "15mins of fame" having won Eurovision that Spring. If she was coming to Wealdstone, I'm sure it would have been to "The Duke" in Wealdstone High St.
(John T 66-71)

Yeah, we were promised Dana! It was the same year 1972, and we were told that a "mystery personality" was going to be at the summer fete and it was hinted loudly that it was going to be the female Irish star. I can even remember someone asking a teacher if it was true that Dana was coming and the teacher just smiled and said nothing.
(Robin Lambert 71-78)

Bernard Cribbens really was due to open the fete one year, but didn't show.
(John T 66-71)

Having met Bernard Cribbins on location after leaving Salvo, I think that it's a good thing that he didn't attend ...
(Robin Lambert 71-78)

I'm sure that Terry Wogan was the guest celeb one year, but my memory could be playing tricks.
(John Kennedy 69-76)

Certainly remember Val Doonican was there one year, probably around 1964/65. He didn't insist upon a Rocking Chair, either! He seemed very pleasant - laughing away with the doting Mums.
(Mike Ward 63-70)

The other great no show was Val Doonican, I remember this as it was the great raffle ticket scam year, approx 1972.
(Paul Green 69-75)

After I left I worked with another great Irish act, The Bachelors, no doubt they were asked to do a gig but I am sure they would have been too mean to attend.
(Paul Green 69-75)
