I recall that he taught foreign languages in the mid sixties but left teaching after only a couple of years at Salvo.

I remember him from school for two reasons. Firstly, he was very small. At about five foot, he was shorter than most pupils. Secondly, he caned me most lessons. He took exception to my cheery disposition and caned me "for smirking". In my day it was a badge of honour to grin to the rest of the class after a beating so he made me "come back for more" on a number of occasions.

Wind the clock forward twenty-plus years. I was speaking at an international pensions conference. At the end of the afternoon and completely out of the blue Terry Lythe came up from the audience and introduced himself to me ...
