Fr Stephen (we always called him "Jack", though I don't know why) taught me history from 1960 to 1963. What he lacked in stature he more than made up for in demeanour. You wouldn't want to mess with this guy. From the moment he entered the classroom a silence descended. If you put your hand up to answer a question his catchphrase would be "I'll buy it!" He had a habit of picking out some hapless individual in class whose attention appeared to have lapsed. Bad news if you hadn't been listening.

But Fr Stephen did have a sense of humour and the sound grasp of his subject generally earned him the respect of the class.
